Everything you need to grow gourmet mushrooms at home

A grow kit is a colonised block of substrate that is ready to fruit: open the box, follow the card, mist it, and mushrooms appear in a week or two. It is the lowest-effort way to taste a home-grown lion's mane or a cluster of pink oysters, and the best way to find out whether you want to go further into bags, grain and agar. Our kits are built on the same substrates and cultures as the rest of the range, so what you learn carries straight over.

Orders ship Australia-wide, tracked, from $15. See delivery.

What to expect from a kit

  • Time to first mushrooms: usually 7 to 14 days after you open it, depending on species and room temperature.
  • Flushes: two is normal, three is a bonus. Rest and rehydrate the block between flushes.
  • Yield: a first flush from a 1.5 to 2kg block is commonly 150 to 400g of fresh mushrooms, with oysters at the top of that range.
  • Effort: a mist two or three times a day and a spot with indirect light and fresh air. No sterilising, no spawn, no tub.

Kit, all-in-one bag or bulk grow?

Kits are for growing mushrooms. All-in-one bags are for growing a culture into mushrooms, with one extra step. Bulk grows from grain and substrate are for growing a lot of mushrooms, repeatably, at the lowest cost per kilo. The comparison guide lays the three side by side.

Questions

Good to know

How does a mushroom grow kit work?

The kit is a block of substrate already colonised by mushroom mycelium. You open it, expose the surface, keep it humid with a few mists a day and give it indirect light and fresh air. Pins form within days and grow to harvest size in about a week.

Which grow kit is best for beginners?

Oyster mushrooms: they are fast, forgiving of less-than-perfect humidity and produce a big first flush. Lion's mane is a close second and suits cooler rooms.

How many times will a kit fruit?

Typically two flushes, sometimes three. Let the block rest for a week after each harvest, soak it in cold water for a few hours if it feels light, and return it to fruiting conditions.

Can I grow a kit outdoors in Australia?

A shaded, sheltered spot can work in mild weather, but most Australian climates swing too far: summer heat dries blocks out and winter nights stall them. Indoors, away from direct sun and air conditioning vents, is more reliable.

What do I do after the kit is spent?

Crumble it into the garden or compost. Oyster blocks often fruit again in a shaded garden bed after rain.
