What CVA substrate is
CVA is our coco coir based bulk substrate: coir for structure and water-holding, vermiculite for air and moisture buffering, and added minerals, mixed to field capacity and sterilised in a filter-patch bag. It is the recipe we have refined over years of our own grows, and the one we reach for with oyster mushrooms and every other species that likes a compost-style base. Open it, mix your grain spawn through, pack a tub or seal the bag, and it is white in one to two weeks with a vigorous oyster culture.
Sizes and prices: 1kg for $30, 2kg for $50 and 5kg for $100. Prices in AUD, GST inclusive where it applies, shipped tracked Australia-wide.
How to use it
- Spawn
In a clean space, open the bag, break up your colonised grain and mix it through evenly at 1:2 to 1:4 grain to substrate by weight. The grow builder does the maths.
- Colonise
Flatten the mix in a tub with a lid, or seal the bag, and keep it at room temperature in the dark until the surface is fully white: 7 to 14 days for oysters.
- Fruit
Open to fresh air, add indirect light and keep humidity at 85 to 95%. Pins form in a few days and are ready to pick about a week later.
Which species like it
Oyster mushrooms (blue, pink, pearl, phoenix) all fruit well on coir-based substrate. King oyster, lion's mane, shiitake and reishi are wood lovers and do noticeably better on the wood lovers substrate. If you are not sure, the substrate guide has the species table.
