The range
Build your grow
Tell us how much substrate you are filling and the spawn ratio you like. We will work out the grain, pick the cheapest mix of bag sizes, and bag the lot in one click.
Bag mix is the cheapest combination of our bag sizes that covers what you need.
Grain guide
Four grains, one standard. Here is how they compare, in grower terms.
How it fits together
Introduce your culture to a bag of sterilised grain through the injection port.
Sterilised grainLet the mycelium run through every kernel until the bag turns white.
Agar for clean startsBreak up the colonised grain and mix it through your substrate.
Premium CVA substrateGive it fresh air, humidity and light, then harvest your flush.

The kingdom standard
Grain and substrate both arrive sterilised and sealed, ready to use.
Our CVA recipe has been refined over years of growing for consistent results.
Prepared with proven methods and carefully selected nutrients for a strong start.
Grain bags carry an injection port. Substrate bags breathe through a filter patch.

Grain is what you inoculate first. Once the mycelium has colonised it, that grain becomes spawn, and you mix it through the substrate: the bulk material your mushrooms fruit from.
Wheat is the all-rounder. Oats and milo break apart easily, and milo gives you the most inoculation points per kilo. Corn has the biggest kernels. The grain guide compares all four.
It depends on your spawn ratio. At 1:2 you use one part grain to two parts substrate, so 5kg of substrate takes 2.5kg of grain. The grow builder does the maths and picks the bag sizes.
Sterilised grain and substrate layered in one bag with an injection port. You inoculate the grain, let it colonise, then mix it through the substrate without opening the bag. They are coming soon.
Keep them sealed, somewhere cool, clean and out of direct sunlight, and use them soon after they arrive.

A culture is living mycelium: the strain you want to grow, kept clean and ready to inoculate a grain bag. Ours are gourmet and medicinal species selected for vigorous, reliable growth on the grain and substrates we sell, isolated and expanded on agar before they go anywhere near a syringe. Because they are grown in Australia there is no biosecurity paperwork, no long transit in the heat and no mystery about what is in the syringe.
The library: Blue oyster, Pink oyster, Lions mane, Reishi and Shiitake. Orders ship Australia-wide, tracked, from $15. See delivery.
| Format | Best for | How to use |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid culture syringe (LC) | Inoculating grain bags and all-in-ones | Shake, flame the needle, inject 2 to 5 ml per 1kg bag through the port. |
| Colonised agar plate | Building your own library, grain-to-agar work | Transfer a wedge to fresh agar or drop a wedge into a sterilised grain bag in a still air box. |
Oyster mushrooms (blue, pink and king) are the quickest and most forgiving, and they fruit on coir-based substrate. Lion's mane is beginner friendly on hardwood and worth the slightly longer wait. Shiitake and reishi are slower, hardwood-only projects for growers who have a couple of flushes behind them. The species guides cover conditions for each, and the seasonal guide says which suits your state right now.

Questions
Live mycelium suspended in a sterile nutrient solution, sold in a syringe. It is the fastest way to inoculate a sterilised grain bag or an all-in-one: inject through the port and the mycelium starts colonising the grain straight away.
2 to 5 ml per 1kg bag is plenty. More spread across several injection points colonises faster; it does not need to be drowned.
Live fungal cultures are subject to Australian biosecurity import conditions and need the right permits, so most growers do not. Buying a culture grown in Australia avoids the paperwork and the transit time.
Kept in the fridge, a healthy liquid culture is usable for months. Let it come to room temperature and shake it before use. A syringe that has gone cloudy with a sour smell, or shows coloured growth, should be discarded.
Both: gourmet species such as oysters, lion's mane and shiitake, and medicinal species such as reishi, turkey tail and cordyceps. Everything on this site is for growing edible and medicinal mushrooms.
